Independent Engine Room Ventilation System

Independent Engine Room Ventilation System

(OP)
Hi there,

Can anybody describe a little bit/give me some info on how to design a proper ventilation system for an independent engine room. What the best air change require? What the temperature should I kept inside the room? What the requirements used for marine/ship HVAC construction? what the best handbook to use?

Thanks for the info.

Hi

You should ask the engine vendor to give you the heat dissipation data for the engine as well alternator. Normally engine rooms are designed for a room temperature of 45~55 deg C. You should also check the applicable class (DNV, ABS..etc.) and if there are any other control panels and instrumentation units installed in the engine room as these can have specific ambient temperature requirements.

Also check if the engine is taking combustion air from the room or combustion air is hard ducted to outside.

Refer ISO 7547 for generic load calculations procedure and ISO 8861 for engine room ventilation design.

Make sure you use moisture eliminator and filters at the air  inlets. Provide sufficient redundancy in fan selection as Engines are the heart of any ocean going vessel and as the heat rejection to air is very high, temperature in the room can increase very quickly if ventilation system fails.

Engine rooms are normally designed to have positive pressure
