TRV Studies in Industrial Power Systems

TRV Studies in Industrial Power Systems

(OP)
I'm trying to understand why we don't see many TRV studies performed at industrial sites.  Based on my experience, I have not seen TRV studies being performed at 5/15kV levels in industrial power systems.  Is it that the capabilities of vacuum breakers at this voltage level far exceed typical TRV requirments so as not to require a study...or is this an area that is not being fully addressed?
Thanks in advance.

RE: TRV Studies in Industrial Power Systems

Yes, TRV related issues are seldom encountered in modern systems of 15KV and below.

There was a time in late 70's or early 80's when 15kV VCB where new in motor starter applications and many TRV related issues, usually motor insulation failures were encountered. Since then the motor insulation standards have been revised to ensure MV motor insulation is suitable for VCB applications.

I learned about this while investigating some issues at a water treatment facility where they had replaced oil breakers with vacuum breakers while leaving the 1965 or older era motors in place and had some failures.
