Cooling Packings on Reciprocating Compressors

(OP)
How is this usually done? Does one use the intercooler/aftercooler water pump, or a separate source, say, potable water?

We had troubles in the past with a cooling tower because the dust, etc. interfered with flow. We then fed packings with potable water, but returned to the cooling tower line. We still had trouble with flow until we discharged the packing cooling water to atmosphere (sewer drain).

We now have a closed-loop cooling system, so dust should no longer be a problem. Some folks say the packing cooling should be on this system as well. My concern-since the packing cases have such small passages compared to the large lines in the intercoolers/aftercoolers, we will not get the required flow rate.
