ASME IX Temperbead procedure qualification

ASME IX Temperbead procedure qualification

ASME IX Temperbead procedure qualification

(OP)
We're looking to qualify a temperbead weld procedure for a set-on branch weld (stub-header). However, instead of running a butt weld for the production test, we simulated the actual joint (with stub piece and thick plate to simulate the header).

However, unsure of what tests need to be run to qualify the procedure, apart from macros and hardness - can't run tensiles or bends due to non-standard geometry. Not sure if anything under QW-290 covers this (seems to be more geared towards standard mockups).

Can anyone advise and point to the relevant clauses in ASME IX? Thanks.

RE: ASME IX Temperbead procedure qualification

kclim;
The main parameters you want to evaluate for temper bead are hardness and metallographic examination to ensure your temper bead method technique is valid. As simple as this sounds, microhardness and metallographic examination of the weld and base metal heat affected zone are all that is needed to evaluate adequate tempering from bead placement.

By the way, you can extract subsize tensile and modified bend specimens from this mock-up, but the hardness and micro's are essential. Yes, review ASME Section IX, QW-290. Also, there may be information in the web site below

Thanks for prompt reply metengr. For procedure qualification, is it correct to perform four macros as per pipe-plate fillet weld as shown in QW 462.4 d) and then hardness tests as specified in 290.5 b)?

RE: ASME IX Temperbead procedure qualification

Yes. Keep in mind if you have an existing WPS that is qualified to Section IX, for temper bead all you need to do is to run a separate coupon using the essential welding varaibles from the WPS with the temper bead technique essential welding variables. It is as simple as that.
