Sulfuric acid anodizing of Al - Troubleshooting

(OP)
Hi All,

http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=b89657ac-e229-49da-9f40-fc954ac87e6e&file=pics.zip

Attached is a small selection of photos of some recently received parts for a product in development.

Not being too familiar with the field and having searched extensively for troubleshooting resources, I would now be very grateful for any input on some of the issues arising from inspection of the anodizing.

Material spec. depicted in each of the photos is 6082 T6; though we are having similar problems with 5251.

They are sulfuric acid anodized to Def Stan 03-25, and dyed black.

Please forgive my lack of technical terminology. Photo 012 shows areas almost absent of anodizing, particularly around corners. 019 shows a speckled finish on the fillet. 045 and 053 show similar.

Can anyone provide any insight into the cause of the problems and how they might be countered? I suspect the speckling is partly due to preparation of the components. The suspension of the components may also be a factor. I would like a reasonable understanding of the causes before approaching our supplier.

If any more information is required, please ask.

Thanks for you help!
