Correct terminology?

Correct terminology?

Correct terminology?

The VFD has a torque estimator function which calculates the output torque based on internal parameters measurement (I,V,f). In VFD supplier literature this estimated torque is also named "Air gap torque". Do you think this is technically correct definition? Why not just to say "Calculated torque"?

RE: Correct terminology?

Air gap torque is exactly what it is - and always has been called (at least from around 1970 and on).

Yes it is correct. And if you want to abbreviate it to just "torque" that would also be correct.

To call it "calculated torque" would be correct, in a way. But since there are different ways of calculating torque, it would be ambiguous. "Air gap torque" indicates that the torque is a "hard real time" torque.

Thank you, Gunnar. I just was under impression that a magnetic flux (or field)exists in the motor air gap, and torque (and/or force) is applied to the rotor.
