rigid phenolic insulation, coating?

rigid phenolic insulation, coating?

rigid phenolic insulation, coating?

(OP)
Can someone tell me what i can coat carved shapes of the above material with in order to make them more presentable, paintable,  and a little tougher so they can be handled, inspected, etc.
The material is the common home insulation and i have thought about using it for displaying a proposed part shape and look.
Im not sure if all finishes are compatible as i fear some finishes may melt it.
I was thinking of something chalky and of high build so it would form an independent crust layer i could maybe lightly sand and touch up.
It can be sprayed, dipped or hand painted, i can cater for all.
I know the above is vague, but really all i need is to be able to hand say for arguements sake, a carving of a lever and for them to be able to look at it and handle it gently.
I have chosen rigid phenolic insulation as its super easy to carve, cheap, available, and can be added to by glueing on little blocks and recarving.
Prototype machining in wax, paper block, or resin isent an option as this is just an idea and the end product will be very low volume and aimed at the local rally groups.
surface finish of the raw carved part is pretty good and it resembles carved soft wood.
Thanks in advance, Brian.
