Hydronic heating design resources help

Hydronic heating design resources help

(OP)
hi all,
does anyone have some useful notes, websites, tips, reference books etc for the design of hydronic heating systems?  I will soon be involved with some projects where the client wants to extend their hot water radiator system and another where they are talking about (ESD consultants input) local condensing boilers with built in pumps and expansion tanks etc.
Can you help?
thanks

RE: Hydronic heating design resources help

Be very, very, wary of doing a retro-fit of condensing boilers to an older heating system that was designed for high temperature hot water.  The heating terminals output will be quite variable depending on the scheduled heating water temperature being used, and you may find that much of the higher efficiency benefits of the condensing boiler will not be used, since the heating terminals will be requiring hotter water temperatures for longer parts of the year.  It will take a full season of tuning to establish a reasonable control tuning and hot water delivery temperature schedule to try to take advantage of the condensing boiler.  It may be more cost-effective to use a non-condensing, mid-efficient boiler that works better with higher heating water temperatures, unless all of the heating terminals are also changed out.

cheers guys,
any solid books one can recommend on the subject.  Actually, I might put out a general call for HVAC engineering text books as I am a new engineer albeit with a background in contracting.

Wara:  Google what you can find for "John Siegenthaler" - he's got a website that you can get what I think are probably the best books and guidelines for hydronic system design :  http://www.hydronicpros.com/publications/

He also writes quite a bit for PM Engineer Magazine among others and always has some valuable tid-bits to pass on.

Thanks GMcD,
that's just what ia am looking for!

RE: Hydronic heating design resources help

Dan Holohan has some very good simple books on hydronics. I like them as Dan has focused on teaching contractors about hydronics. The examples he uses are nice and visual and they've helped me teach clients about what I'm doing, and why.

I think Dan Holohan is the author of most of the Wallace-Eannace tips.
