Export points or sketches to iges file

Export points or sketches to iges file

Export points or sketches to iges file

(OP)
Hello, I am trying to create an iges file containing only points and some sketches I have made in a .par file so I can then open the file in ANSYS ICEM. Is this possible?

I have tried to save it using multiple options (by clicking "Options..." when you choose to "Save as.." .iges) including saving as a wireframe and other obvious options. The result is that SE V20 always pops up the message: "This model contains no bodies. An output file will not be generated". And the file is not even saved. Does someone know what is happening?

Thank you

RE: Export points or sketches to iges file

IGES always outputs the solid body.  The other options are elements in addition to the solid body.  With no solid body to output, you will always get that error.

I recommend create some sacrificial geometry in the model.  A small extrusion that is easy to delete from ANSYS ICEM.  Even then, you may not get the points or sketches to translate.  It may only export the solid -- I haven't tested it.

RE: Export points or sketches to iges file

If all points and sketches are on one plane you can try
to do the sketching by using a draft and save as IGES
from there; it will export all 2D data. Make sure to draw
1:1 and hide the background or draw on the 2D-Model sheet
(you can save out of this environment as well). AFAIK IGES 3D
(out of .par) won't save the 2D-data

RE: Export points or sketches to iges file

Thank you for your answers. Scott: I tried this but if the sketch is not associated with any solid body, then it will not be exported. Don: Unfortunately my sketches are on several different planes.

Actually, I have a whole skeleton of sketches that I joined using a lofted protrusion. However when I export the surface to .iges, and then open it in ICEM, only the critical points at the beginning and end of the protrusion are exported. The rest is exported as a complete surface. Anyhow, when I am blocking in ICEM, I need those points in the other sketches as reference.

The only solution I can think of is to make a small protrusion from every sketch and then export it to an .iges file. Then eliminate the undesired surfaces and/or curves and then merge this geometry to the whole geometry I had exported before (the lofted protrusion).

Can anyone think of another solution? Is there another format to which you can export a set of sketches or points from a 3D space?
