Scanning with Faro & Geomagic Qualify

Scanning with Faro & Geomagic Qualify

(OP)
Hello Everyone,
Is anybody else scanning with a Faro using Geomagic software?  I'm interested in learning what your settings are, in regards to scan rates/densities, in addition to other settings.  I'm scanning large parts, such as a piece of automotive glass, or the outer surface of a door.  I am using the Geomagic Qualify to take those scanned surfaces to make a file I can import into UG NX6 (unordered points, then wrap them, etc..) So far, I'm not happy with the quality of those scanned surfaces, and some file sizes are too large to work with.

Has anybody been through this?  I'm curious how to improve what I am doing...

Thanks in advance

RE: Scanning with Faro & Geomagic Qualify

I'm not using it but was not impressed with the last demo. I have been keeping an eye on this type of technology for a number of years and continue to be disappointed. Thats not to say it doesn't have a use for some people.

In our application we wanted to get CAD by using the scanner. A color on the target such as black would absord alot of the beam and result in a poor resolution.

good luck

With regards to scanning dark colors, chrome, or glass, I recommend using a can of Spotcheck Developer made by Magnaflux, SKD-S2.  It's about $12 a can, I believe.  Sprays on like paint, but it's a combination of alcohol and talc... when the alcohol dries after a few minutes, you have a thin coating of white talc, and it scans great.  It wipes off with a paper towel and windex.

I've seen that using a Faro scanner can have some great results, I'm just not getting them yet.  I'm forging my way through using it, and I need a few tips...

RE: Scanning with Faro & Geomagic Qualify

We've just been through our first exercise using the laser scanner - for chassis parts it is excellent, we can actually see where the arms are sitting in 3d space relative to the CAD.

Sorry, I'm just the recipient of the scans, next time I talk to the operator I'll ask him.

Cheers
