Gabion Baskets

Gabion Baskets

Gabion Baskets

(OP)
I've been looking at a site that will need the use of Gabion Baskets to hold the existing slope. I'm an Electrical guy and was wondering if anyone had information on the calculations used to determine the amount of force from the earth? I'm guessing it's overturn, bearing capacity and sliding. Also, sizing and configuration information on the baskets would be gratefully appreciated as well.

Thank you,

RE: Gabion Baskets

Get a geotechnical engineer involved.  For information, check out Maccaferri's sites.

RE: Gabion Baskets

You wouldn't want me, a Civil Engineer, to ask you how to design an electric motor using 440 volts three phase?  I once took an electric engineering course for civil engineers, but I wouldn't dare try to do that design.

RE: Gabion Baskets

If the gabion baskets are needed as a retaining wall, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole if I were you.  Get a civil or geotechnical engineer to design it.

Does your site have a geotechnical report yet?  That will make a difference in the calculations depending on soil type.  Also, geotech reports for a little extra fee do a 'slope stability analysis'

If the gabion baskets are just being used for erosion protection, a manufacturers rep can probably help out quite a bit.

As mentioned above, maccaferri seem to be the premier gabion basket people.

I found Steve Hoff at 972-436-2974 helpful on a couple of my projects using gabions. (shoff@maccaferri-usa.com)

Good luck on your project.  Email me if you need a civil, hehe.
