EGR and Smog System Removal

EGR and Smog System Removal

EGR and Smog System Removal

(OP)
For the sake of engine bay access, as well as minor weight reduction, I'm about to delete my smog system.

This is on a Ford 5.0L.  The plan is to cap off any vacuum lines, plug the hole in the back of each cylinder head, plug the tube on the H-pipe, close off the egr hole on the egr spacer in the intake system, then finally use an egr eliminator in the connector to remove the CEL.  Unfortunately there will be a constant code saying the egr is closed, but at least the CEL will be off.

I had a few questions, though.

I've heard that because there is no more inert exhaust gas entering the intake system and as a result not entering the combustion chamber, the combustion chamber temperatures will rise as there will be more oxygen in the cylinders.  This only happens during casual driving as the egr is designed to close at WOT.  Does anyone have an idea of how much this will make combustion temperatures rise?  My car is exempt from emissions, but will the higher emission levels due to higher combustion chamber temps affect performance?

I know the basics about this, but I'd love to know what exactly will happen and how it will exactly affect driveability.  This car is basically a toy that I drive to work on nice days, so it doesn't need to be too practical.

" Does anyone have an idea of how much this will make combustion temperatures rise?"

I'll put my evil hat on and say 43 degrees.

Now what will you do with that information?

I should reword that, is it going to be hurting me at all?

No.
weight reduction from EGR removal.. ha ha

I'll take it anywhere I can get it.

I can think of much more productive and less destructive ways to reduce weight, like shaving metal of the cylinder head to block mating face, metal of the base circle of the cam, metal from inside the ports and manifolds, replacing iron manifolds with aluminium, replacing cast iron exhausts with steel tube, maybe removing weight from clutch and flywheel, removing some weight from crank journals and counterweights, remove unnecessary seats, remove A/C and radio, remove mats, remove spare tyre and tools, replace alternator with a small Japanese unit.

Seriously if the EGR is closed at WOT, how does removing it result in performance gains. It does not weigh much, it does reduce NOxs and I am told it improves drive ability and fuel efficiency. It also takes very little space.

It makes doing anything sparkplug related on the passenger side a real PITA.  It can't stay around for long tube headers.  I've done alot of weight reduction regarding the body, the motor however isn't getting touched as it's not worth spending time on a tired stock motor when an aftermarket block as well as the rest of the motor is coming.  Not to mention its gotta be removed to run a supercharger.

New motor (sic) coming?

How often do you plan to change the spark plugs in the interim?

Plug changing a PITA?  Try one of the newer V-6 or V-8 !  Besides, I changed the plugs in a 5.0 '96 Ford F 250 and it "wern't so bad"!

Eventually there will be a new motor, but in mean time I'm preparing the rest of the car.  Two of the egr pipes run along side the passenger side header.  Not so much changing plugs as doing compression tests/checking the plugs for signs of the motor not running right.

RE: EGR and Smog System Removal

Exhaust valves run hottest at full throttle, so the EGR won't have any effect there. I'd say removing it is unlikely to do mechanical harm, if it upsets the calibration too much I guess you can put a new computer in sooner rather than later.

Well I've got an eliminator that plugs into the egr harness connection that tells the computer the egr is closed, at all times.  It shouldn't mess with the computer.

RE: EGR and Smog System Removal

And your ECU won't throw a code thinking the EGR is bad because it's showing closed all the time? Not that it matters since you are exempt from emissions.

RE: EGR and Smog System Removal

In summary, there are better things you can spend your time and effort on than EGR elimination, if the goal is increased performance.  If it is simply in the way, well then, I guess you have to get it out of the way.
