Magnifying glass not working
Magnifying glass not working
(OP)
I tried the magnifying glass in 2009 via the G hotkey. The rim of the magnifying glass pops up, but the image inside stays the same size. Sometimes I can see the outline of the geometry a little bigger, but it doesn't draw it.

Try scrolling the mouse wheel to see if the magnification changes.

I see the latest driver from nVidia is the same as the last one approved for SW, so you are stuck if it is card/driver related.
Do you have access to an approved card to test?
Have you tried Software OpenGL?
RE: Magnifying glass not working
The middle mouse button doesn't work. It's a logitech mouse.

RE: Magnifying glass not working
Are you saying the middle mouse button doesn't work because it's a Logitech mouse ... or that it doesn't affect the magnification?
RE: Magnifying glass not working
SW appears to have dropped support for about 38% of the NVidia lineup from 2008 to 2009.
- 2007 42 cards certified
- 2008 39 cards certified
- 2009 24 cards certified
RX provides this information:Quadro4 550 XGL WinXP 6.14.10.7756 04/21/2006 2007 View Notes
Quadro4 550 XGL WinXP 6.14.10.9136 04/21/2006 2008 View Notes
Quadro4 XGL series dropped
Manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
Card: Quadro4 550 XGL/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
Driver: 6.14.10.9136
SoftwareOpenGL does not support the magnifying glass option. So this test is inconclusive.
Running SW2009 without options (an RX function) does not work and crashes so I can't perform this test.
Interestingly nothing shows up on tested and not passing on the SW site for the NVidia card. So it is inconclusive that this card will not actually run with 2009 since they apparently didn't even test it.

Bwa-ha-ha! Are you serious? You mean like, "Up to 65% increase in drawing speed"? Or maybe customer approval of something like 95% satisfaction (or whatever they now say the number is)?
Sorry--I guess this seems like my laugh is at your expense here--but I completely lost all faith in anything corporate SolidWorks says about two years ago when it was demonstrated to be false by real-world application. No connection between reality and their numbers/performance/satisfaction AT ALL. I think they're using the dart board for their marketing jargon a bit too much.
In other news, I've had no use for the magnifying glass, because the zoom on my mouse is much faster/effective anyway with my work style. But I have mapped the S key to a mouse button (Logitech MX-Revolution mouse), which is a nice time-saver.
Good luck finding that better performance with these recent versions of SolidWorks. My experience shows reliability and speed (for what I do) to have reached a pinnacle in v2007, with v2009 only a little better than the bloated v2008.

RE: Magnifying glass not working
That would be nice, but it doesn't work that way!
I think the touted performance increases are based on comparing SW09 to SW08 when both are run on hardware more suited to the demands of SW09. i.e. newer hardware. Running SW09 on hardware spec'd for SW08 will not give the same results.
Taking it to the extreme, imagine trying to run SW09 on a computer which was spec'd out for SW96. I doubt it would even install.
RE: Magnifying glass not working
Take it from me, it won't. The laptop* I am typing on would do a respectable job of running 2004, but after that it wouldn't even install.
Back to the topic at hand, does anyone have thoughts on how SW implemented the magnifying glass? The one major difference between the XGL and the new FX models is RealView support. Is anyone running a non-RealView card with magnifying glass working? It would seem that the driver should insulate the application software from the hardware.

RE: Magnifying glass not working
It's the same with all/most CAD player. Look at the SolidEdge marketing BS claim to be 100x faster. Turned out that only applied to moving a face on an imported, non-native model compared to converting that same model to recognised features and then using regular editing functions. Well, that's great if that's all you do, but most people don't have that 'luxury'.
To be fair, the SE claim was "up to 100x faster" so they were actually telling the truth, but as with most truths, they can be presented in misleading ways.

RE: Magnifying glass not working
The original SW leadership was probably very much involved in all aspects of the smaller company. Now that it is a major player and subsequently larger company, I imagine the marketing empire has freer reign to do what marketing people do best ... exaggerate.
RE: Magnifying glass not working
It's a Logitech mouse. I suppose I should look for a driver or something if that is affecting the G button.

So this is pretty much a graphics card issue. Thanks for the thoughts.
