RE: what CAD/CAM packages do you use?

Hello!

We, in MLM (Maribor, Slovenia) used Pro/Engineer 2001 for seven  years for making mould tools for aluminium (car industry) and brass parts (MLM Armal). We make almoust complete assemlies, drawing and CAM for this tools. In my point of view this is the best software, even better than Catia v5, Ideas or Solidworks. It's complicated in beginning, but it pays of later, when gaining expiriences. Full parametric features are very handy, but in few cases this can be a problem. Problem is also with bad importet geometry (very bad IGES), which has very low accuracy. This can make problems with moulding. CAM is that field, on which PTC must still work on. But all in one, I could recomend this software package for CAD/CAM. We shortend our construction and manufacturing time at least 5 times.

WE USE SOLIDWORKS FOR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND MOLD DESIGN. FOR CNC PROGRAMMING MASTERCAM IS OUR FIRST CHOICE. WE HAVE ALSO TRIED CIMITRON BUT IT IS NOT AS USER FREINDLY AS MASTERCAM

Kage78, We (Moulddesigner Ireland) use I-DEAS for 3D cavity/core splitting and 3D design and bring detail thru to the I-DEAS drafting package which in my view is the best in the market, I can quickly section and dimension any view with relatively little effort. I pull in 2D dxf's of the relative plates from DME, DMS, HASCO or whatever supplier the toolmaker requires me to. We can turnaround mould designs very cheaply and quickly using this system.
