FPE in California

FPE in California

Are Fire Protection Engineers   in California required to be licensed in some other specialty of engineering such as Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, etc. ?

Or, is FPE a separate licensing/registration category unto itself ?

Must reports prepared by such FPEs be signed and sealed ?

RE: FPE in California

California recognizes the NCEES criteria and allows FPEs to practice as a licensed engineer disciplined in fire protection engineering once they have passed the FE and Discipline examinations, file the appropriate documentation, and pay the fees to the State of California. Once your licensed, you must document annual CE and act responsibly to the client and ethically based on the SFPE rules and state law.

I've done a fair amount of work in CA for other FPEs - however I am not licensed in the state so my post is only based on my experiences. But we've had enough discussions about it so I don't feel uncomfortable with my response.

The requirement for a report either requiring or not requiring a seal is based on if the activity constitutes engineering, jurisdictional requirements, and other criteria.
