FILE->NEW QUESTION

(OP)
We are using NX5.

Is it possible that when a new part is created (file->new) to open a dialogue box that prompts the user to enter the part specific attributes?  I assume that it would be done with a nxopen somehow.  I am not extremely versed, but if someone could get me started, I ca ould probably go from there.

Thanks

RE: FILE->NEW QUESTION

Yes, you can add a post-action to the menufile which will cause whatever desired sort of program to be executed upon finishing any menu item.

To learn more about this, go to the User Documentation and expand the section titled 'Automation' and open the chapter titled 'MenuScript User's Guide'.  Once there, go to the chapter titled 'Keyword Statements' and open the document titled 'ACTIONS Statement'.  Here you will learn how to configure pre- and post-actions which can be added to the standard-action of any menu item.

But that being said, you can also help yourself out by creating/editing your template files so that they already contain predefined attributes, even if the values are left empty or with simple placeholder text as that will also help people get the spelling correct as well as to not forget that certain values are needed.  Granted, you would still need something to enforce (i.e. automate) the process, but at least this you can do now without any extra effort on anyone's part.

thanks John.  I will look into that!
I already have my start parts defined with the needed attributes included, but we have a few users asking if we could add the feature of adding the attributes on part creation.  I just wanted to see if ti was possible.

RE: FILE->NEW QUESTION

You can also replace the File-Open dialog with a custom program using the User Exit calls.

RE: FILE->NEW QUESTION

You may also want to fiddle with defining blank attributes in templates and seed parts where possible, because if you design top down then you'll find opening a new file spawns the required dialog whereas create part in assemblies won't and nor will exporting a part.
