Design of Elliptical Flat Plate

Design of Elliptical Flat Plate

Design of Elliptical Flat Plate

(OP)
Dear all,

In the case of an elliptical manway like the one shown in the attached picture, how should I calculate the required thickness of the elliptical cover?

In some catalogs the thickness specified by the manufacturer seems too small. For example: a 12x16 manway specified to 700psi @ 650F has a 3/8" thick cover.

Best regards,

RE: Design of Elliptical Flat Plate

For the design of flat eliptical covers, refer to UG-34(c)(3). However, the cover you presented in the attachment is a dished type, which I believe belongs to the quick opening closures as per UG-35.2. Please note that the majority of the quick opening closures are proprietary designs and not necessarily calculated using ASME formulas. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
gr2vessels

RE: Design of Elliptical Flat Plate

Figure out the thickness of a flat elliptical cover per section refered by gr2vessels and compare the result with the types you presented and see if it makes sense. tcommercially ave
