Distillation column simulation

Distillation column simulation

Distillation column simulation

(OP)
Hello,

Can anyone please guide me on:
1) how to determine the number of stages and the feed tray location in Hysys to simulate a distillation column?
2) can any of the available column options be used to simulate the columns e.g. if i want to simulate a Condensate Stabilisation column, can i use a simple distillation column? in that case can I enter a pseudo bottom stage inlet stream as I dont have one in the actual column but it needs to be entered in Hysys.

Thanks

RE: Distillation column simulation

If you can't solve it by hand, then how can you expect a computer program to solve it.  Hys or any process simulator only allows engineers to run 100's of cases in order to optimize the process.

Start with learning what a distillation column can do and how it does it, then you will be able to fiquire the feed poits and stages...

RE: Distillation column simulation

fifi121,
Simulating a distillation operation in Hysys is realy easy. Just do it by trial and error.

Assuming this is a new tower, Start with let's say 30 stages and locate feed at the middle. Fix the pressure and fix the tower specs. Run the model and note the condenser and reboiler duties.
Then change the number of stages. Make the stages fewer. If you don't see a (big)-change in duties, continue lowering the stages until you see a najor increase in your duties. Then do the same with feed point location.

But for your final option, you need to check the available utilities to match your simulation. In most cases your reboiler duty, and condenser duties are limited by what is available at site. the same is true for the overhead and bottom tempetures. If your overhead produtc requries a very cold stream to condense, then it may not be available at site. So in that case you need to change your simulation to meet your available utilities. For instance by changing the pressure in tower.

But mind you there are many many factors that come into play when simulating and finally designing a distillation tower. You better consult an experienced engineer.

Good luck

I hope I could be of some help.
