Building HRSGs at minus 50C

Building HRSGs at minus 50C

Building HRSGs at minus 50C

(OP)
We are about to become involved with a CCGT project that will be built under winter conditions when the temperatures can fall to minus 50C.

We have considered storing the boiler pressure parts in heated warehouses and erecting the HRSGs in a building with a sliding roof or similar through we can lower the tube banks within supporting frames. The roof would be closed except for the times when pressure parts are being lowered into place.

Does anyone have anyother ideas.

Sounds like an acceptable plan to me. Also, drink lots of Vodka and stay warm.

metengr,

Thanks for comment and advice on vodka.

Realistically you can do pretty much whatever you want, there is nothgin to prevent you from storing the parts at almost any temperature, the real issue in my experience si what temperature you are operating them at, dont fire upt he boiler when the metal has cooled to -50°, I work in Canada and we deal with -40 routinely here, and the consensue among myself and the people i work with is that the material has to be good for the conditions it will see under operating circumstances.

Please note however stress considerations for thermal expansion and contraction are seperate, you dont want to have it all bolted in place at -50 and then run it at +100 that would get mess with the expansion.

In short store it however you want, just dont do final bolt up or start up until you have warmed the steel up a point above its MDMT.

Thanks jmiles,

My concerns are that during lifting and moving into place stresses could arise that would cause brittle fracture. A further concern is that during welding there could be temperature differences that would cause stresses and brittle fracture.

You may have issues with the refractory when you get below zero as well.

Can you pour the concrete and foundation steel only in the summer period?

You are looking at the steel and welding (brittle fracture) but concrete doesn't like curing (or mixing!) that cold either.

Can you buy more vodka and boil the water with it?
