EMTP Insulation Coordination

EMTP Insulation Coordination

EMTP Insulation Coordination

(OP)
Hi,
I have an indutrial network with a 132 kV GIS. Incoming lines are overhead and are owned and protected by the utility.
All outgoing feeders are by XLPE insulated cables to step down transformers.
I have been requested to do an insulation coordination study. Not being a specialist of I.C., I would like to know if I need to run a transient stability software like ATP or just sizing and installing surge arresters in convenient locations will do the job.
I understand that EMTP type softwares are very complicated and sophisticated packages to run and interpret.
Pls can anyone experienced with insulation coordination studies, help ?
thanks

RE: EMTP Insulation Coordination

cesgibis, I don't know what your situation is, but it sounds like you need to hire someone who knows how to conduct an insulation coordination study. If you don't do the study, you will only be guessing at sizing the surge arrestors.

ATP is free & powerful, but it does have a learning curve so you can learn it.

RE: EMTP Insulation Coordination

cesgibis,
At ATP you run an eletromagnetic transient program instead of a stability program.
ATP is very complicated and sophisticated packages to run and interpret.Forget to try.
It is best sizing and installing surge arresters in convenient locations will do the job.
In  our 138kV system , solid grounded, BIL 650kV, we use:
3 units of OZn-surge arrester, 120kV, class 2, 5.1kJ/kV
installed at 138kV transformer terminals  and at the connection betweeen   XLPE insulated cable  and overhead transmission line.
