Support for catalytic converter
Support for catalytic converter
(OP)
Hello folks! This is my first posting in EngTips.
I am in the automotive industry, and I have been tasked to design a catalytic converter mounted near the engine. I post in the piping forum because I feel the problem is somewhat related to what you guys are doing.
Consider the BMW V10 engine in this link: http://www .bmw-m5.in fo/images/ 2005-BMW-M 5-Engine-F lywhee.jpg
Notice the catalytic converters after the manifolds. They are supported by brackets to keep vibration stresses at an acceptable level. When designing a similar bracket in my application, I have three challenges:
1. Making sure the bracket fits due to tolerance buildup
2. Make it stiff enough to keep stresses down, and
3. To allow for thermal expansion.
I can solve the first two, but the thermal expansion seems tricky after some hand calculations. BMW must have solved this, but I can't really see how. Could the part with two screws between the bracket and the cat work as some sort of hinge? Or does the cat "slip" in its band clamp?

RE: Support for catalytic converter
Welcome to Eng Tips!
Since it has been a week and you haven't got any responses, may I suggest that you repost this in one of the automotive forums. I don't regularly post there, but forum78: Transmission, Driveline, Hybrid Drive engineering seems like it might be more what you need. If not that one, then forum108: Automotive Engineering other topics.
