Seismic Loading Estimations

Seismic Loading Estimations

I have looked at BS EN 1998 (Eurocode 8) and it seems rather complicated.  The job is in the UK (as you probably would of guessed) and it's just a simple filter support. (see attached)

There is no soils information available and I was wondering if there is any way to simply calculate the effects of seismic loading on a foundation, or estimate the possible effects, without having soils info and surveys done?

The client considers it negligible, but because it was raised as a result of a HAZID study the issue has to be addressed.  Any ideas, or refrence material that may be of help?

HAZID study is a tool for hazard identification)

RE: Seismic Loading Estimations

There's software to generate earthquake aleatory spectrums targeted to a earthquake level (Richter?) happening at a input distance. I think something like that I have from the DOS era and its name was ... EQPACK or so? (Will try to locate and confirm) Obviously not coming from local data it can only be approximately good. Even worse, site soil earthquake properties may make the normative earthquake forces to vary wildly.

So except the support includes bracing that makes it overly conservative an approach without the required data may not work.

ishvaaag many thanks for your response.  I thought as much.  Thank you for your input anyway, i think i will have to put it to the client that if they want a response to the issue they will have to pay for a proper geo investigation.
