Steel Stack

Steel Stack

(OP)
ASME STS-1 Vs. API 560

I've always thought that the based document for design and general requirements for steel stacks is ASME STS-1.

Recently a Mech Eng. told me that API Std 560 is to be followed for detailed and design.

Opinions and comments are welcomed

Thanks,

Corgas

RE: Steel Stack

ASME STS-1 is specific for steel stack design containing nonflammable gases. API 560 is for fired heaters for general refinery service. Use STS-1.

The applicable code or standard for the steel stack is the one specified in the purchase order. If the stack is part of an API 560 fired heater system and the purchaser says to use ASME STS-1 in the stack design, the minimum requirements of API 560 Clause 13 should still be met. The purchaser has the option of using ASME STS-1 or API 560 (Clause 13 & Annex H) in the design & general requirements for steel stacks. Also check with the jurisdiction for minimum requirements.
