What will it take?

What will it take?

What will it take?

(OP)
I'm in the process of converting my local workstation from a 32bit system to a 64bit system (Win XP) and I am unclear of what I need to do as far as re-loading NX (6). I thought I would be able to just download the 64bit version and install it, but I called GTAC to verify and I was told I need to call my sales rep.
Can anybody shed some light on this for me?

   Thanks Beforehand!

RE: What will it take?

Where is your license run from?

RE: What will it take?

Stay with me now, since IT is not my forte by a long shot, but the licence is comming off of the server. We are using one Design seat and two Manufacturing seats (all independent)
I was wanting to use my workstation as a test unit before we go and switch everybody over to 64bit...

RE: What will it take?

You need to call your sales rep to get your congiuration upgraded to 64-bit. No charge, that I am aware of. Then you will be able to download the 64-bit image of NX6.

I will assume that you have a dual-core 64-bit capable cpu on your machine. Since you are running NC toolpaths, upgrade the memory to the max you can fit in/afford, 8GB would be a minimum. Then you need to get a copy of XP 64-bit OS and load that.

Now you can load 64-bit NX6.

RE: What will it take?

If you have a server and a legal license then you can probably login to the GTAC support site and download the 64 bit versions to load on to your machine. A license served from another machine that remains unchanged should have no bearing on the situation. In other words if you just go ahead and try then it will probably work. I see no harm in speaking with your sales rep to confirm, but as I see no reason that it wouldn't work I would probably just go ahead and try since the whole exercise is likely to take a relatively small amount of time anyhow.

As I understand it you can still run the 32bit version of NX on your 64bit machine. It will run in 32bit mode meaning that you don't get the performance advantage of being able to access the full compliment of 4Gb or more of memory. This may help you keep going if you do get stuck.

Although I can see no reason why it wouldn't work I could be wrong about the above and would like to know if I am since I haven't yet attempted the kind of 64bit installation that you have and would like to know for future reference.

   Thanks Guys!

Yeah, it seemed to have just been a communication misshap between me and GTAC...
I'm downloading the 64-bit version right now but; it seems there is no 64-bit version of CAM!?!? Is this correct? Am I gonna be stuck running the 32-bit version under my 64_bit OS? How much of my available memory will the 32-bit software be able to utilize under the 64-bit OS?

RE: What will it take?

There is no difference in CAD and CAM modules, they are all part of the ugrafa.exe and related *.dll files that make up the executable image. So CAM is 64-bit, just like CAD is!
32-bit NX is still limited to 4 GB maximum memory even when run under XP64-bit OS. The advantage is that you don't have the 2GB per process limitation that you do with XP32-bit.
Running a 64-bit OS with NX 64-bit effectively removes all memory limitations.

So when I pull the files under the NX/Unigraphics NX-Windows (64-bit) I get the CAM as well? I don't have to get it from under the CAM Express tab?
Maybe I'm not giving all the information I need to be here. Initially we are now running 1 freestanding design seat and 2 freestanding CAM Express seats...

RE: What will it take?

As fara as I know, yes.
Can you switch to the Modeling application from the Cam Express seats?

RE: What will it take?

(OP)
Yes I can. Going tru the gateway , I can swap between all my available applications...

RE: What will it take?

Then the software will work for 32 or 64 bit the same way.
