Side Mirror Break-Away

Side Mirror Break-Away

Side Mirror Break-Away

(OP)
Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can find any standard for external side rear view mirror break-away force? I can't find it anywhere in FMVSS 571.

Also if anyone knows a typical Cd (Co-eff of drag) value for a standard car side mirror, or a nominal drag force, that would be most helpful also. My reference speed is about 86m/s, but any will do.

Many thanks,

AutoSpace

RE: Side Mirror Break-Away

If I remember correctly commercial vehicles are 90 lbs of force. NHTSA should have something on it.  86 meters per second is rather fast? Nearly 200 mph.

RE: Side Mirror Break-Away

the Cd for a mirror, after it separates from the vehicle?  ...or the Cd for a vehicle which has a mirror or two on it?

RE: Side Mirror Break-Away

Almost certainly Hucho has links to studies which examine door mirrors, I think a Cd figure as such is misleading.

Cheers
