Pipe Normalising

Pipe Normalising

Can we accept API 5L Gr B pipe manufactured in normalising range in place of normalised pipe

RE: Pipe Normalising

No. Normalization is a separate thermal treatment. Simply hot working and air cooling is not normalization, it is called hot worked material.

The originator of the thread is inquiring as to whether they can accept 'normalising formed' or 'normalising rolled' (see definitions 4.31 and 4.32 in API Specification 5L) pipe which will have the same 'N' designation as pipe which has been subjected to a separate normalising treatment after pipe forming.  If the purchase order has not prohibited 'normalising formed' or 'normalising rolled', then there will be 'difficulties'.  For PSL 2 pipe, the mitigating factor will be the requirement to qualify the MPS which will demonstrate satisfactory properties.

RE: Pipe Normalising

I should have prefaced by saying we do NOT accept normalizing as formed or rolled in our pipe purchase specification.

Hi All,
Thanks for so prompt and appropriate responses. Some additional info - requirement is API 5L Gr B PSL1, seamless pipe.
Can we accept dual certified API 5L/ A 106 Gr B hot finished pipe supplied in normalised condition (Not normalised)

RE: Pipe Normalising

If the risk assessment of the service for which the pipe is to be used deems it to be acceptable.  Here are some factors to consider:

1.  What minimum finishing temperature will you deem to be acceptable as a normalising equivalent? Ae1? Ac3? Ar3?

2.  How will you verify that all of the pipes have been finished at, or above, the temperature selected in 1?
