gas plant pipings connection

gas plant pipings connection

(OP)
Dear all,
Please I want to find out if it is proper to have an all flanged conection within a Gas Plant. I have always thouht of flanges as potential leak point.

RE: gas plant pipings connection

why would a flange leak. unless it is not installed correctly.  You can use all welded joints, but what if you didn't weld them correctly?

Flanges should be kept to a minimum for cost reasons, but welded in valve are problems, so flanged valves are used and the risk of a leak at the flange is acceptable over the life of the plant.

so, think along risk versus reward lines.....

RE: gas plant pipings connection

Flanges are normal for most hydrocarbon services such as natural gas.  Welded connections are common for acid gas lines with over 10% hydrogen sulfide.  Even then the control valves etc. are normally flanged.

Look into hydraulic tensioning if you are concerned about flange leaks.

RE: gas plant pipings connection

Don't see why you wouldn't use flanges in a plant, or above ground at a plant site. If below ground I would avoid due to the potential for a leak... perhaps that is what you might have heard...
