Corrosion and Eear Protection of 380 Cast Aluminum

Corrosion and Eear Protection of 380 Cast Aluminum

Corrosion and Eear Protection of 380 Cast Aluminum

(OP)
I'm looking coatings to protect aluminum (380 cast aluminum) from wear and corrosion from chlorine bleach, ammonia, industrial cleaners, tap water, and effluent.

I have looked at electro-less nickel and the cost is on the high side, what other alternatives are there?

RE: Corrosion and Eear Protection of 380 Cast Aluminum

conversion coating plus polymeric topcoat

anodizing

You might also consider a switch to 390 alloy, which has better wear resistance than 380, then follow Cory's suggestion for conversion coating plus topcoat.

If your part is not too loaded and/or under cyclic loads, and if it is not going to undergo abrassion, you can look into a hard anodizing + sealing process (MIL-A-8635 Type III)

No extra organic coatings or platings, very good corrosion resistance and durability of the coat at a reasonable cost are the advantages of this option, IMHO.

However, silicon and copper content of that particular alloy could require a previous study of the process.

Sorry, typo: it is not MIL-A-8635 but MIL-A-8625
