Explosion Proof Enclosure

Explosion Proof Enclosure

Explosion Proof Enclosure

(OP)
I have a request to design an enclosure for electronic equipment that is explosion proof,

Can any one give me some more info than what is on here(it needs to contain an arc and not denonate surrounding atmosphere, gaps, polished flanges, etc).

Is there a type of plastic or metal that is preferable for these types of enclosures? Can anyone offer tips on how to properly seal such and enclosure and the type of material to use? Any tips on how to vent the gas internally so that it does not escape outside?

Thanks.

RE: Explosion Proof Enclosure

Explosion-proof enclosures need to be certified to be used in a particular environment.  It would be far easier (and cheaper) to buy a pre-manufactured and certified enclosure than to design and certify your own.

RE: Explosion Proof Enclosure

Manufacturers of explosion proof enclosures include Cooper Crouse Hinds, Appleton, OZ/Gedney, Curlee, etc.

RE: Explosion Proof Enclosure

By far the smallest cost to design and build an explosion proof enclosure will be the actual design and build cost. Testing and certification are where the big money will go.
Consider buying off the shelf. The manufacturer will have spread the testing certification expenses over possibly thousands of units.
