Progress reports

(OP)
On the daily inspection progress reports, what must be included in all reports to be right. I have problem writing daily soil reports.

RE: Progress reports

the date (and time),
what you inspected (location, specifics of what was inspected),
what you found (data),
and maybe, is it acceptable (compare data with targets) ?

RE: Progress reports

If you find yourself writing daily soil reports, you really have a problem!  Or did I misunderstand something?

RE: Progress reports

As rb1957 noted and these...

Project Number
Project Name
Date
Time on site/Time left site/Travel time
Others on site at time (contractor, owner, other consultants, etc.)
Specific observations/tests AND Specific locations and limits of observations/tests (this is very important in geotech work....if you don't limit the area observed, it will be assumed that you observed and accepted all areas even when you did not)

Compliance with plans/specifications/geotech report

Summary of conversations with those on site

Any recommendations/cautions/results given  (if you are a field technician, you might be limited by company policy as to what recommendations you can make.  If you contact your project engineer and pass along recommendations to someone, note that in your report)

Do not direct the work of the contractor or imply that in your reports.  Do not accept or reject work unless you have a specific contract requirement to do so.  If you do these things, you will open your company and possibly yourself to significant liability.

Do not comment on project/site safety unless it is an unsafe condition to which you were personally exposed and refused to do your job based on such conditions (for example doing a footing inspection more than four feet below grade without appropriate trench protection/shoring or doing density tests in a trench that is more than 4 feet deep)

Sign the report.  Leave a copy at the site if you can.

RE: Progress reports

As per his typical thoroughness, I would add any person(s) who visited the site during your time on site - could be the architect, the contractor's general manager, building inspector(s), etc.

RE: Progress reports

I mean, of course, Ron's thoroughness . . . .
