Galling Phenomena: Info Sources

Galling Phenomena: Info Sources

(OP)
Folks...

I need some good references on the phenomena of metal-to-metal galling. Web-based or text-book references, or helpful comments/discussion, would be appreciated.

My particular problems revolve around CRES and Heat-resistant alloy combinations... but my "need" is also generic ... to includes general concepts, galling-mechanisms, prevention schemes, etc... and the other typical aerospace alloys [aluminum, titanium, coppers, etc].

Regards, Wil Taylor

What is CRES?

Galling happens when you have cold welding due to high stress and ductile materail/s coming in contact. If you select material combination which do notform cold welding, it would be easy to manage.  Also consider dissimilar metal combinations, metal-polymer, metal-ceramic, if your design allows.  Coating one or both the surfaces is also suitable alternatives.  The coating material can be polymer or ceramic or even metallic alloy (different from the substrate or counterface material)

Refer to good books on friction and wear.

RE: Galling Phenomena: Info Sources

The only reference I know of off the top of my head is ASM HANDBOOK Volume 18 Friction, Lubrication, and Wear Technology.  The definition is on page 10 (10th edition), where "scuffing" and "scoring" are used as other descriptions.  The discussion of galling is under the section Wear by Rolling, Sliding, or Impact, pages 236-270.  You probably already know this, but you can obtain this book through the ASM website (http://www.asminternational.org).  Two other references from ASM that you may find useful, and which are quite new are Surface Wear: Analysis, Treatment, and Prevention and Surface Engineering for Corrosion and Wear Resistance

Cdots.. CRES = Corrosion Resistant Steel = Stainless Steel

TVP... thanks for reminding me to query ASM database... found a re-print article of value, being sent to me. I think our Tech Library has the ASM Volume You noted... I will check soon.

RE: Galling Phenomena: Info Sources

I got some good data from Haynes International regarding galling/wear of Nickel Alloys. They have a technical help line on their web page.

You may also consider plating another material such as silver onto the area of concern.
