Piping Materials for Digester Gas Systems

Piping Materials for Digester Gas Systems

Piping Materials for Digester Gas Systems

(OP)
I am designing a digester gas system and am considering using stainless steel piping rather than carbon steel. I have seen 304 and 304L used as well as 316.  What are the advantages of each and what would be the optimum material with respect to corrosion resistance?

Any recommendations or information would be greatly appreciated.

What is your digester digesting?  You know that and what is in the gas but we can't read your mind.

This is an anaerobic digester at a municipal waste water treatment plant.  Same question would apply for a landfill gas system.

kylie....

As a general rule of thumb, for landfill gas piping systems, 304/316 SS systems are more resistant to the corrosive effects of H2S than carbon steel.

Of course they cost more also....

For large diameter, low pressure piping,in H2S service, Schedule 5S or 10S stainless may be a better choice.

As a "designer" fo piping systems, you should have at least some knowledge about the fluid transported.....do you ?

Hi,

yes, the fluid transported is gas.

60% methane
35% CO2

Small amounts of H2S, nitrogen and of course the gas is saturated with water vapor.  There is a low pressure section (6" wc pressure) with piping ranging from 8-20" dia and a high-pressure section (60 PSIG) with diamters of 6,4 and 3".

Hi Kylie,

have you considered plastics for the small bore stuff?
