single phase motor L1, L2, L3

single phase motor L1, L2, L3

L1 is hot, is L2 common and L3 gnd? Searching the entire net and all I can find L1, L2, L3 is 3phase.

RE: single phase motor L1, L2, L3

Is this a joke?

RE: single phase motor L1, L2, L3

Sounds a bit like an entry for the Darwin Awards...

RE: single phase motor L1, L2, L3

I think what my uncharacteristically rude associates are saying is that it sounds awfully like a three phase motor. Does it have a name plate? Post a photo.

Maybe that's because L1,L2,L3 is 3-phase.

pdf from the manufacturer says single phase

I m aware that L1, L2, L3 is 3 phase, but...and I also have another 110vac mtr that has the hot marked L1 and the common marked L2. Make a rule and ppl brake it.

RE: single phase motor L1, L2, L3

Where did you get the idea that this was a single phase motor? It isn't. You have a 3 phase motor there. If you hook up Neutral and a Ground, you will let out the magic smoke.

On 1 phase equipment intended for use in the US, they will often mark the leads as "L1 and L2" because of the fact that they may be capable of being used on a 1 phase 120V circuit, OR reconnected to be used on a 1 phase 240V circuit. Yes, in the 120V circuit the designation could show L and N, but L1 and L2 is fine as well. On the 240V circuit however, L and N would be incorrect. So showing L1 and L2 is the universally acceptable alternative.

RE: single phase motor L1, L2, L3

Nameplate on motor calls out voltage 230YY / 460Y, and amperage 2.15 (@ 230 V) and 1.07 (@460).

It's 3 phase.

jraef,

"On the 240V circuit however, L and N would be incorrect."

Blimey! We've been doing it wrong in the UK for a hundred years... tongue

thanks, this is why I ask. First I do research, and if I m still unsure, I ask. Thanks again!

Hey, I qualified that by saying "in the US". Give me a break here... smile

Or did you interpret that as meaning "us" instead of US, and then took the "Royal us" version to mean people on the island of Great Britain? wink

RE: single phase motor L1, L2, L3

A three phase motor would not have a neutral. A single phase would have one like your house appliances that are motors plugged into 120 Vac.

RE: single phase motor L1, L2, L3

Where we use 120/208 v systems North America, 230/400 V systems are used in the UK and single phase service is derived from one phase at 230V. (Did I get that right Scotty?)
Now, in North America, if we connect 240 V transformers in wye we will have a 240/416 V system.
If we now take 120 volts from a center tap on a 240 volt winding, one end of the winding will still be connected to the system neutral. Hence the Neutral/0V-115V-230V configuration in the UK.

That motor says 3 phase on the nameplate itself.

Yes, but those motors do not have a L3. The "TEFC 3P" tells you it's 3-phase. Typically, there is a seperate square for "Phase" on the nameplate but they didn't bother clarifying that data on this motor.
