What's it called?

What's it called?

What's it called?

(OP)
I'm looking for a toothed locking device for a machine I'm building. I realize that my description is not very good, so please educate me on the correct terms for this part.

It is basically a flat washer with teeth on one side. The flat side will be welded or glued to a component. Two of the devices will fit together to lock the positional relationship of their component ends. The teeth will also prevent the ends from slipping under torque, and they will provide an easy way to fix multiple parts at the same angle.

I've seen the devices in use for bicycle seat adjustment and also on snare drum stands.

Thanks for any help,
Matthew

RE: What's it called?

Serrated face washer, serrated belleville washer, toothed lock disc, toothed clamp washer, etc.  We use these also, and I have never heard of a precise technical term for the general category.

Thanks.  Now I have a starting point, which is much better than randomly guessing.

"poker chip" is the term I've heard and use.  Not really a technical term but most understand the meaning.

RE: What's it called?

Nordlocks are actually a lockwasher and not much good for index function.  We tried them early on in our application, and they are basically unidirectional, and the ramps are too shallow to prevent slight movements.  We finally had a component diecast specific to our need several years ago.

I looked at Nord-Lock's products recently and came to a similar conclusion.  The indexing function is key to my design.

Thanks for the help and please keep it coming.

RE: What's it called?

Try a search for "knurled washers".  Carr Lane has a decent illustration of the principle.

Remember that they are no good for fatigue or corrosion!

RE: What's it called?

Indexing?  Take a look at Stage8 locking washers.
