Retrofit Manway Into Concrete Tank

Retrofit Manway Into Concrete Tank

Retrofit Manway Into Concrete Tank

(OP)
Does anyone have experience with the installation of a new steel manway into the side of an existing concrete tank?
Please advise.
Thanks, Jason

RE: Retrofit Manway Into Concrete Tank

When you say into, are we talking about physically cutting into the concrete structure or are we talking about attaching a steel ladder manway onto a concrete structure using Hilti installation or expansion anchors?

RE: Retrofit Manway Into Concrete Tank

(OP)
We are planning to core drill a hole through an existing 18" concrete wall and attach an outward opening 30" 316SS manway. Does anyone have recommendations of specific manufacturers for this type of manway?. Any helpful hints for this project?

RE: Retrofit Manway Into Concrete Tank

Have you tried posting this to the "Structural Engineering Other Topics" group?  They might offer insight.  If you can fit the manway in between any reinforcing steel, the it is a definite maybe from a structural standpoint.  If you are cutting reinforcing steel, then all bets are off.  I wouldn't recommend it, but I'm not an expert in concrete.

RE: Retrofit Manway Into Concrete Tank

Considering the size of the manway you should be accomplish what you want to do, provided you provide extra reinforcing around the manway to compensate for the the penetration.

Providing cutouts and openings is standard in the cast in place concrete industry and the extra reinforcement is akin to the area replacement around the opening.
