I want to know if there is a code that requires that flanged joint shall have washers under the nuts on a natural gas piping

RE: Use of washer on flanged joint

The only code requirements I have come across for washers have pertained to non-metallic pipe joints such as FRP flanges. See B31.1 III-5.4.1(B) and B31.3 A335.2.5(C) both state washers shall be used on non-metallic flanges.

Just out of curiosity, what would the fluid service have to do with washers being used in flange makeup? Wouldn't washer callout be required based on flange material and the associated compressive stresses under the nut  and bolt faces?
