Shell command on big model in Mechanical Desktop

Shell command on big model in Mechanical Desktop

Shell command on big model in Mechanical Desktop

(OP)
I am working with hollow plastic part produced by rotational molding. I make a design of the parts in Mechanical Desktop 4. For machining molds from my models I don’t need to make the models hollow, but I would like to calculate the models with FEA program. I have tried to use “shell” command to convert solid model to hollow parts close to real, but on big models around 6-8MB I always have message: “Failed to compute Thin Wall Solid, Gap cannot be filled”

Does somebody have an idea what this message means and how to accomplish my objective-which is make  it “Hollow”?
Is it problem with speed of computer or with software?

Thanks in advance.

Olga

RE: Shell command on big model in Mechanical Desktop

Dear Olga;

I dont think you have a software problem. More than likely there is some small feature in your model that is stopping the shell process.

For Example:
Take a look at your model and see if you have any tiny radii on the outside surface of your model. Temporarily make them larger or delete them, see if the shell command starts working.

Unfortunately it will likely require a trial-and-error process of deleting features untill you find the one that causes the problem.

Dear Adrian2,

Thank you for the answer and excuse me for the delay with the answer. I already have tried to find where may be the trick that blocks my shell command, but I didn't find it yet. I am going to invest more time in the search.

Thank you very much for the support, I will wright to you about my results.

Best Regards

Olga
