jumper sizing for TRV capacitor application

jumper sizing for TRV capacitor application

(OP)
How do you size a jumper for a TRV capacitor.

Specifically in our case

We have a TRV cap, which connects to a 2-2500 kcmil AAC line conductor through a 250 kcmil AA jumper.

Capacitor rating is 30nF, 80kA at 138kV.

I will appreciate any help or direction I could get.

Thanks

RE: jumper sizing for TRV capacitor application

I would think 250 kcmil is fine for the jumper to the TRV capacitor.

I saw you noted 80kA on the capacitor rating. The capacitor itself is not rated for 80kA, but rather it's added to the breaker to allow the breaker to be rated for 80kA.

scottf,
thanks for your response. Could you tell me why is that you think 250kcmil AA is fine for this application? You are comment about 80kA is correct.
Thanks

ZAZN-

Because the capacitor is a high impedance to ground, i.e. very little current flow steady state, in the range of 1 A or so.

Plus, I worked for a company that made TRV caps for 15 yrs and I know that 250kcmil was a typical jumper size used...even seen smaller where corona wasn't a concern.

Can someone recommend some TRV capacitor vendors ?

RE: jumper sizing for TRV capacitor application

Where are you located?

RE: jumper sizing for TRV capacitor application

I'm in California. Here is the capacitor I'm looking for

Capacitance: 2 x 10,000 pF or 1 x 20,000 pF at 60 Hz and 100 kHz

Tolerance on capacitance: ±10% at 16.5 kV, 60 Hz and at reduced voltage with a frequency of 30 kHz, 50 kHz and 100 kHz

RE: jumper sizing for TRV capacitor application

I'm not sure who makes TRV capacitors at distribution levels. I would assume you would just buy a distribution capacitor from the likes of Cooper, GE, ABB, etc...

For transmission level voltages, e.g. >=46 kV, the suppliers are Trench and AREVA...basically a CCVT without the voltage transformer portion.

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately, they don't have what we need.
