Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

(OP)
Hi,
What are the factors that i have to consider in selecting Generator for Tidal power plant and wind power plant?

Can i use the similar approach as Wind power plant for Tidal power plant in selecting generator and power components?

Regards,
Siva

RE: Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

If you are in the desert, a Tidal plant will not generate very much.

Sorry, couldn't help myself... wink

RE: Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

Given the amount of information in the OP, your answer was as good as any possible.  When, oh when, will people learn to ask full and complete questions with enough information to be able to nail down a specific answer?

RE: Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

Siva, if that's a homework question then you shouldn't be asking it here. If its a genuine work related question then you need to buy some books and start reading up on the subject. You can't design a power plant via an internet engineering tips forum, be it wind, tidal, coal, whatever. The generator is just a part of the overall design.

Hi, basically I am looking for a good study material to understand more about tidal power plant. I did extensive search in internet, but could not get good information related to Tidal plant in Power/electrical engineering perspective. Whereas I got good number of papers, which describes the electrical systems in wind power plant. So just curious to know whether Electrical Machine topology for Tidal systems would be same as Wind power plant?

sorry! if you feel this is Homework kind of question.

RE: Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

I'm kind of curious about this too. One of my professors has a design but it is a low frequency device and its only a small prototype and I'm not sure really how to scale the generator to make it represent what is going on. Silva we basically use the same induction motor we use for our experimental wind generators (small 30W). It's just that you need to encase it so it is not exposed to the water and also its because we haven't had the time to really figure out a design for a generator for that problem. Moderating the frequency is the most important part  because with waves you  can have different phases and wavelengths that either you find a mechanical solution or you incorporate it with your generator design to try to create a general frequency. Also depending on your design and scale you need to create a generator that gives you the right Wattamps and shows your system is creating something noticeable.
Any additional information on wave generators is a appreciated because that is what I'm really interested in!!!
(off topic warning) does this mean i should be a Naval engineer?? I like working with power and electronic systems but i really liked designing wave generators :-\ I feel like here in the US there aren't that many oppertunities compared to Britain and i probably won't find a job associated with it.

RE: Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

By Tidal plant, are you asking about generation from the up and down motion, or storing water at high tide, and generating power at low tide? It makes a difference.

And what ever happened with the idea of generating energy across the thermocline?

RE: Difference between Tidal and Wind Power plant

Whoops im sorry i was focusing on more of a wave generator   smile hat. Tidal plants are focused more at storing power at high tide and generating power at low tide I think they also are designing tidal plants that operate in areas with very strong currents. I dunno that much about the generators they use.
