Differences: B31.3 versus B31.12
Differences: B31.3 versus B31.12
(OP)
Last year (2008), ASME B31.12 "Hydrogen Piping and Pipelines" was released. Prior to this pipe spec, ASME B31.3 was generally the go-by for hydrogen piping systems in the US.
The purpose of this thread is to identify differences between B31.3 and B31.12 to help bring folks like myself up to speed on B31.12. If your job is anything like mine, you don't have time to sit down and spend days going through the spec - so having a discussion around the differences, especially in the area of design and test would be extremely helpful.
There's a good overview of the basic conceptual differences posted here:

This goes over a few very high level features of the code as a starting point for anyone not familiar with the development of this code.
It might be easiest to point out just one or two differences, referencing paragraphs in the codes. Trying to enumerate all the differences at once will be an eye-lid slammer. Also, any references to internet sites that discuss differences would be appreciated.

RE: Differences: B31.3 versus B31.12
The B31.12-2008 has 3 parts because this one Code will cover piping and pipelines. But the 3 parts are different that the 2005 presentation predicted. Part GR is General Requirements that apply to the entire document. Part IP applies to Industrial Piping – typically above ground piping and its support system. Part PL addresses pipelines. The commercial rules will be added in future editions.
The committee is trying to "fill the gap" between various existing piping Codes as they can be applied to hydrogen piping service. It might be useful for you to read the Forward of this Code. That being the case I have uploaded that.

Old specifications like this still referred to B31.3 as the min go-to but it is important to note that B31.12 ALSO DOES refer to B31.3
