12" Storm Drain under single story building footing?

12" Storm Drain under single story building footing?

Would like some suggestions on best method to run a 12" storm drain under a building footing.  Pipe material, cover etc..  Have about 20" clearance between top of pipe and bottom of footing.  Thank you .

RE: 12" Storm Drain under single story building footing?

use a steel casing

RE: 12" Storm Drain under single story building footing?

fyi see also guidance like at http://books.google.com/books?id=kZEz-ogMXGwC&pg=PA159&lpg=PA159&dq=pipe+loads+under+building+foundations&;source=bl&ots=LbbWgFuXyi&sig=Aa2mT5kkWhPeCLwhnMyPCeGo3tc&hl=en&ei=T08pSuGvJNCJtgfhpb2oCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7 (as yours is gravity application, however, any settlement or heave could conceivably affect pipe invert if pipe moves with same and this should be considered where signficant).  In any case, strong pipes and flexible joints in general probably don't hurt in the long-term near such instersections.

Thank you both.  Looks like we are going with DIP.  Contractor wanted to use RCP, but cost of steel casing is pretty pricey.

RE: 12" Storm Drain under single story building footing?

Another approach is to deepen footing at that location, run pipe through foundation wall. May make sense if pipe would be just below footing.

RE: 12" Storm Drain under single story building footing?

can't relocate the pipe around building/foundation? or adjust pipe elevation to drop much lower than footing or drop footing below pipe?

hopefully someone consider the risks and implications of what happens to the building if the pipe even needs maintenence or experiences problems/rupture/leakage.

RE: 12" Storm Drain under single story building footing?

It is because of the risk of breaking that flexible pipes with nice aging features are gaining more and more hold for sewage exit from buildings; for drinkable water they are almost universal for new projects here. If one has to do some pipe entry or exit on a building and not feasible but with rigid pipes one should acommodate differential movements by surrounding it with a soft matrix in the required extent to ensure good behaviour for the foreseen relative moevements in the life of the building. And do not forget that some plastics are loved by rats to train teeth, so some mechanical protection may be required as well.
