Pipe Specification?

Pipe Specification?

Pipe Specification?

(OP)
I'm looking for a pipe specification to use for a pressure vessel. I need a 36" OD Carbon steel pipe, vessel wall depending on pipe specification will be between 3/8" and 1/2" thick.

Design Temperature 300F, Design Pressure 50 Psi.

MDMT -20F

We can fabricate our own vessel wall but we are looking for an ASME approved material to use for the shell to minimize the number of circumferential welds as the vessel is about 20 ft long.

RE: Pipe Specification?

SA-106-B

RE: Pipe Specification?

36" is already too large for available seamless pipes like SA106 Grade B. When you roll it by your self, SA516 Grade 70 is normally used.

We would like to have the pipe come in to our facility already welded with just one longtitudinal weld.

My understanding is that unless we can purchase the pipe to an existing approved ASME specification, it would have to be made from plate and either welded by us or another code shop with a partial data report.

Is there any spec pipe we can purchase that meets ASME requirements in this size? We are just looking at how to help keep our cost down for our customer and still provide a safe and code compliant product.

RE: Pipe Specification?

Can you use SA-53B, welded pipe?

RE: Pipe Specification?

(OP)
I can, if we can find it.

RE: Pipe Specification?

SA-53B shouldn't be too hard to find in STD and XH weights.

RE: Pipe Specification?

(OP)
The only pipe we have found so far is API 5L Grade B

I can't find any information showing this as an acceptable product to use.

Any thoughts?

RE: Pipe Specification?

It's not for ASME work, but verify with your supplier, many times pipe is dual spec.  It may also meet SA-106B or SA-53B

RE: Pipe Specification?

Just checked, not dual rated.

I guess we will make our own shell.

RE: Pipe Specification?

hi, the largest pipe commercially available is 24in and possibe 26in,
I will my supplier to see if they can supply larger as i was offered larger Di in the pass.
Any shop can make you a cyl SA516 70 to your specs.
sect VIII or sect I, it can even be cheaper since the thickness will be less as compared to pipe.
