I have a graph in Open Office Calc that I want to insert in a drawing?  Anyone have success with this?

RE: Insert graph option

If Open Office is OLE compliant, you should be able to link or embed it.

What methods have you tried? What errors were given?

RE: Insert graph option

The current work around is to export the file as a pdf, then extract the page with the graph on it, then edit it and convert it to a jpg....however, that requires both Acrobat and Photoshop, which not everyone here has or wants to use as a method of doing this process.

OO is OLE compliant but it seems I can get the file embedded but not the actual graph.  No errors, you simply see nothing happening.  It's like shouting at a snoring man...nothing registering.

RE: Insert graph option

If you are running SW, I assume you have Excel ... so why not use that, or at least export to Excel after creating in OO.

Limey, we don't have Excel on our SW machines (two of them) as we have migrated to Open Office in the last year or so.

RE: Insert graph option

Howdy,

Don't get me started smile .

Waidesworld ... So you don't use Design Tables?

RE: Insert graph option

Howdy,

It's really a shame. Shame on SolidWorks. They sell a product with many of the finest features that won't work without your also purchasing M$ Excell.

Bummer sad

Limey,

We can't use design tables because of Excel and I am not asking IT to support the Bill F'ing Gates retirement fund for this feature.  SW charges enough as it is per license so we work around that option also.

RE: Insert graph option

Waidesworld,

I was just sitting here wondering - How could I make this happen (use Calc with SW)? I was going to start asking in some OOo forums if anybody thinks it's possible. I used to know someone that claimed he could write code to make any two programs work together. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if that is really possible. I'm not really sure how to approach this. But I'm interested. Any suggestions.

Just wondering

RE: Insert graph option

No.  It is not possible.  SW is hard-coded to interact with Excel for design tables and Excel-based BOMs.  You might be able to write an add-in to get similar functionality to design tables, but by the time you pay someone $15k to write that you could buy a couple seats of Office.

WELL - That sounds like a challenge to me smile.

You could be right though. OOo Calc is completely different from M$ Excel. Even though Calc can be set to open any .xls files and has a complete Save As .xls translator, I've not seen the ability to just use a group of cells without displaying the entire program/menu. Also Calc is not a stand alone program, it's just one of the Modes (probably not the right terminology) in OOo. Although others are also requesting access to the Write mode (instead of M$ Word) of OOo.

Paying someone for this would be just wrong on every level smile. I'd be willing to bet (if I were to bet) your contributions to the SW community through this forum has far exceeded a mere $15K. This reminds me of the basRegistryUtes.bas module that was developed some years ago. It seems to have been developed by a group a volunteers and then distributed for free. It still took SW over five years to include this important basic functionality in the SW API.

I'm interested to see just how difficult this might be. It'll have to be in my spare time though and probably mostly asking a lot of questions smile .

Thanks - your input is always appreciated
