Hole; Normal to Face

Hole; Normal to Face

Hole; Normal to Face

(OP)
I have a created a point pattern on a surface, and I am adding holes at these evenly spaced points using the 'Hole' command. The hole direction I wish to be normal to the face at each hole center. Where a point falls in a concave area of the surface, the hole stops shy from breaking all the way out (makes sense as the edge of the hole is some small distance below the surface). What is your opinion on the best way to get these holes to break thru (or start further away?) using NX6?

Thanks for your time,

KLINE

RE: Hole; Normal to Face

What version are you running?  I'm running NX 6.0.3.6 (which should be available next week) and I do NOT see that problem at all, as I've shown below:

To an Engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Hello John, I am running 6.0.0.24. Attached is a picture of the issue, perhaps it was fixed in one of the updates.

John, when I switched the surface in question to be concave in only one direction the holes went in without an issue. Could you check your example again with compound curvature (if it wasn't already)?

Thanks for the quick reply too,

KLINE

RE: Hole; Normal to Face

Can you try making the holes 'Through Body'?

Note that we have added an option to address this situation in NX 7.5.

Hello John, the last image I sent did have the holes 'Through Body'. Same result, but I did notice that if I slightly lessen the concavity in the area of the holes I can get them all to show through all properly. The issue certainly isn't true in all cases of these types of surfaces (which I may been saying above); it seems to be dependent on the curvature at each individual hole around the diameter of the hole.

Good to know NX 7.5 has a new option to fix it. Nice!

Thanks,
KLINE
