Section inertia? Could it be calc'd from New Section?

Section inertia? Could it be calc'd from New Section?

Section inertia? Could it be calc'd from New Section?

(OP)
NX6.0.2.8 MP2

What is the best-practice method to obtain section moment of inertia properties?

And, as a follow on, wouldn't it be nice if there was an option to calculate section inertia properties (and other properties such as center of gravity, cross sectional area, etc) directly upon creation of a New Section (ie in NX6)?

Thanks.

RE: Section inertia? Could it be calc'd from New Section?

I created a video clip but am having problems uploading it.  In it use the Dynamic Section function to identify the desired profile, then I ask that curves be extracted for that section, which I then use with the...

Analysis -> Section Inertia...

...function to find the Section properties, which are created as a PMI note/annotation.

I'll check later and will try and upload the video again.

John, Thanks for the reply; I'll watch for the video. On my second question - did it make sense, or should I try to explain what I was saying more clearly?

It just seems like with the New Section dialogue, the user is going through a very similar workflow as in the Analysis > Section Inertia dialogue, so why not have the option of seeing section area, inertia, CG, etc properties right there?

Also, a lot of times, the designer is curious about a section's inertia, without necessarily needing/wanting a persistent PMI entity.

OK, try this:

While I understand what you're saying, look at the video as this may almost cover what you looking for.

As for not wanting to create the PMI note/annotation, instead of selecting OK or Apply after selecting your section, try selecting the 'Info' icon in the 'Output' section of the Section Inertia dialog.
