Continued joining 4142
Continued joining 4142
(OP)
The material thickness is .500 with 100% penetration over about 22" length basically 4 weld joints joining a box. Their is a .060 step joint behind the weld beam so it does not melt into the inner parts of the box. It might anyways. The inside of the box has Parallelism of .010 to a datum so the box can't twist. Thanks For the info.

For future reference one can reply to their original post, there is no need to generate a new post for responding.
Second, at 0.5" thickness with the preheat you mentioned earlier, I would not PWHT. Also, what is the original heat treat condition of the 4142? Was it purchased annealed, normalized, quenched and tempered?
RE: Continued joining 4142
A. A514, HSS. Then note 1 says
B. 4142 heat treat 28/32 hrc.
I asked and he said the material was in plate form that is all he said. What do you mean when you say , I would not PWHT? Thanks Mike
