Spiral data - sheet metal help

Spiral data - sheet metal help

Spiral data - sheet metal help

(OP)
Hey, this is my first post here, so excuse me if this topic has already come up... i didnt find anything in the archives.

So, i have a flat spiral that i am going to cut out of a sheet of 18ga Stainless and i need to know what is going to happen when i 'pull' the center down the axis.... essentially making a spiral layer cake.  I know from experience this is going to stretch and twist, but i want to know how much.  I tried using the sheet metal tool in SW09 but i had little success.

any help would be great, thanx. matt

RE: Spiral data - sheet metal help

If I correctly understand you have the 3D Spiral/Helix feature . And you would like to 'flatten' this spiral to make a cut of the sheet.

Please refer the attached picture. Am I correct?

If so I would like to propose you the following steps:

1) Make a 2D Sketch of the top face of the sheet.
2) Preselect the "Spiral/Helix" feature and click "Convert Entities" command from the Sketch Tools menu to project the spiral into 2D plane.

Now you have the flattened spiral.

3) Create a profile of the cut (you can create a reference plane with "Normal to Curve" option to make a sketch on)
4) Use Swept-Cut feature to make a cut.
