Why would a 'smart' battery charger care what type (lead acid, gell, etc) of battery it is charging?  Wouldn't the demand be dictated by voltage level reguardless of material?

RE: batt charger batt type

The voltage level and type of charging, constant current, constant voltage, pulsed housekeeping, et cetera is very dependant on cell type.

Even a 'small' change from vented lead acid to gell cell requires a change in voltage.

Li-ion has a very different cell voltage than lead acid.  The list is endless.

RE: batt charger batt type

PeterKsiazek's response was spot on.

I would only change "very dependant" to "extremely  dependent".
