Cannot replace with parts thet are open.

Cannot replace with parts thet are open.

Cannot replace with parts thet are open.

SE never allows me to replace with parts that are open because file is write locked.  I do not understand how replacing with a part will change it so that it might compromise it in another session.  Is there a way around this or am I approaching the replace command wrong?

Thanks

RE: Cannot replace with parts thet are open.

When replaceing part in assy mode, you choose the part you want replaced with a different part. The part your replaceing it with can not be open in a different seisson.

See in assy mode when you save the assy it saves all of the parts in youre assy. I'm thinking that if it allowed you to do that it can some screw something up, i think...lol

I just thought of maybe why this would be.

Let's say you replace a part with a part that's open in another session. Now you flip to the part that's open in the other window and make some changes. Solid edge has no way of figuring out that you just changed and saved that part. Now when you save the assy, any changes you made to the part in the other window will be over written by the part in assy. Understand??

Making changes to parts that are used in different assemblies is always a problem and can be done whether assembly is open or not.

I used proE in the past and this issue doesn't arise.  If that's the way with SolidE I will just have to live with it.  Just like I have to live with other SE shortcomings over ProE.
Looking back I never had the problems with SE that I remember with proE.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

RE: Cannot replace with parts thet are open.

Don't think this is really a shortcoming of SE as you call it.

Think about it once. If you have a assy open and parts activated then open a part through explore, or just right click and open, it knows its open in assy also. Now if your replacing a part with a part that already open. SE currently has no way to see which one is newer when saving assy. Remeber, when saveing a assy it's saveing what the pert current looks like in the assy.

I personally never have a file open and then try to replace a part with the part that's open, it's just a bad practice i believe.

Also, it's my opinion that majority, not all, of so called short comings are typically due people not knowing how to use the cad system. Every cad system no matter if it's ProE, SolidWorks and ect have it's short comings. Trust me, i deal with this on a daily bases almost
