Direct Fired Glycol Heater

Direct Fired Glycol Heater

Direct Fired Glycol Heater

(OP)
Hi,
I have to specify and purchase a direct fired 50% glycol heater. There is an existing glycol heater (built in 1960s) in the plant, which is designed per ASME Section I.The design conditions are 75PSIG @ 300oF, with 'S' Stamp on it. My question is, does it qualify as a boiler and must be designed per ASME Section I or can it be built per ASME VIII Div 1?
Thanks

RE: Direct Fired Glycol Heater

This is an excerpt from the ASME VIII Div 1.

"U-1(c)(2) Based on the Committee's consideration,
the following classes of vessels are not included in the
scope of this Division; however, any pressure vessel which
meets all the applicable requirements of this Division may
be stamped with the Code U Symbol:
(a) those within the scope of other Sections;
(b) fired process tubular heaters;
(c) pressure containers which are integral....."

Is your heater classified as a fired process tubular heater?

Cheers,
gr2vessels

RE: Direct Fired Glycol Heater

before the (a) should be a period . not a colon :
a,b,c belong to the ''following classes''
if a,b or c can not be stamped w/ U but if the vessel qualifies/meet all the sect VIII-1 yu can stamp it...
you have to address these with your inspector, hopefully he/she knows the answer and decides to help you.
